Today marks as one of the most important days in our timeline. Throughout the timeline, Arré Voice has seen a lot of people who never thought they will become a creator in this life, only to be surprised by the love they received from the community on the app which has kept them going. This in turn has also given us the motivation to keep building. It’s safe to say our creators’ ability to stay on their creator journey is directly tied to our ability to stay true to the product & continuously obsess about making their lives better.

What are Voicepools?
Reducing the barriers to create has been one of the core tenets of our product innovation. We bet on short form audio. This led to the birth of a Voicepod – a simple 30-second audio clip with an optional title and image, which creators can publish asynchronously for the world to hear. It’s a ridiculously simple way to create and call yourself a creator. We have made a lot of people cross that barrier in the last year of our existence. After staring for months at user data and talking to users all over India, Voicepools were born. With Voicepools, we wanted to create a space where creators can jump in without overthinking—just write a prompt or add your voice to a prompt in 30 seconds and go! For listeners, it’s all about content with context, making it easy to dive into conversations that feel natural and connected from the start. The prompts to initiate Voicepools can be simply, silly, or serious.
- It can be a question such as ‘Tell me you’re from Mumbai without actually saying it’, that invites unique answers or;
- It can be an emotion, such as ‘I’m feeling nostalgic today, tell me something that takes you back’, where people can share their reactions.
- It could even be a late-night vent, like ‘I’m so over my 3 AM insomnia, anyone else?’ and watch as others pile on with their own thoughts. So on some days, as a creator I come to Arré Voice to say exactly what I feel like and other days I can come in to just participate in conversations that are already buzzing on the app.
Creating a Voicepool
Why Voicepools?
A closer look at how our users navigate and spend time on Arré Voice has fascinated us in more ways than one. Our users love exploring various rabbit holes—whether it’s a trending topic, a meme they stumbled upon, an intriguing user, or a recent event they want to learn more about. The problem statement has now become more straightforward – how can we create more engaging rabbit holes for our users that creates stickiness, that naturally draws them in and keeps them hooked. That left us with 3 questions – (i) How can we quickly get users to anchor on the app to a certain content theme (ii) How do we get our users to quickly sample thoughts of others (on the anchored theme) that pushes them to either create on it or move to next (iii) If they decide to create, how soon can we help them publish.
While a lot of apps are already trying their hand at group voice messaging, Voicepools is a tool to share your fleeting thoughts on literally anything and just move ahead. Having tried it ourselves, we’re certain you’ll go from ‘I’m not saying anything’ to hitting publish just after listening to 2 or 3 voices. As homo sapiens, we humans are deeply influenced by our communities. And that’s what we think forms the rock bed of Voicepools. It’s a simple way to share your fleeting thoughts and derive the satisfaction of being a part of a community.
Invite somebody
How does it work?
A user simply needs to tap on the + icon on the homefeed and create a voicepool. Then, they must add a title to their voicepool – which serves as the prompt (80 characters), set privacy (public/private), choose the language and hit post. Once published, the creator of a voicepool can invite people to respond in 30 seconds voice notes (remember our obsession with short audio). Anyone can respond in a public voicepool, whereas in a private voicepool, only those the creator has invited can respond. We are sure you are already imagining your first private voicepool with your school/college gang and the range of things you’d discuss there, which you wouldn’t want the public to listen to.
Users can discover Voicepools on the home feed and explore page. From there, they’ll enter a full screen experience, sorted into public and private sections. In each Voicepool, the voices of contributors are arranged in circles, with the size reflecting the engagement it received.
Contribute to a Voicepool
With all that said, it is actually much easier to just play with the product yourself and make sense of it. We believe Voicepools compliments Voicepods beautifully serving two very different purposes – one is intended for sharing thoughtful nuggets packaged like a professional audio content whereas the other is intended to spark a conversation and curate responses spontaneously. Both are great listening experiences for those who would like to go into different content rabbit holes.
While we go back to silently building & tinkering, we promise to communicate more often on what we are upto at Arré Voice and to reflect on the journey. We hope that you will love and enjoy exploring Voicepools as much as we enjoyed creating it. We, however, do not wish you the kind of fights we had while bringing it to life.
